Aronia berries are high in antioxidants
The aronia berries or better known as the chokeberries ranks high on the ORAC chart, which is Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. This is a test tube measurement of their antioxidant strength.
It has been reported that the chokeberry contains over five times greater levels of these compounds than the cranberry. They also contain vitamin B2, B6, C, E, Folic acid and high levels of flavonoids, quercitin, rutin, tannins, catechins, phenolic acid, hesperidin and procyanidin.
These amazing berries are native to North America and have been used as ornamental plants in gardens. The astringency of the berries makes them inedible raw. But after cooked the berries can be used to make wine, juice, jams and is also used for flavoring soft drinks.
There are basically two types of aronia berries. They are the red or black. There is a hybrid of the two called a purple chokeberry.
Important health benefits of the Aronia berry
Flavonoids are a water soluble polyphenol molecules containing carbon atoms. They are found in most plant material such as fruits, tea, and soybean. Together with carotenes, flavonoids are also responsible for the color in fruits, vegetables and herbs.
So why are flavonoids in aronia berries so important to my health?
The laboratory found polyphenols are powerful anti–oxidants. Polyphenols also are found in fruit and especially berries, as well as green tea and chocolate. Anti–oxidants slow cell deterioration. Polyphenols also help prevent the build up of plaque on smooth muscle cells, as well as inhibit platelet formation, which can lead to blood clotting.
Flavonoids can act as an antioxidant to protect your cells as an antioxidant against imbalances that can cause cellular damage to do oxidative stress. This has been linked to cancer, aging, atherosclerosis, ischemic injury, coronary heart disease, and neuro-degenerative diseases.

The medical industry recognizes dietary antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and carotenoid. However, recent studies have demonstrated that flavonoids in fruits and vegetables can also act like antioxidants.
Flavonoids are becoming very popular because of the many health promoting effects that they have on the body. Some of these activities include anti-allergic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and antiviral. Flavonoids are known for their abilities to relieve hay fever, eszema, sinusitis, and asthma.
Research has shown that aronia berries will slow down the activities of cancer cells and may even destroy them completely. Benefits have been shown for people that suffer from diabetes. People that consumed aronia berries showed their sugar levels decreased allowing for the insulin levels to become more stable.
Wine is fine but red wine is devine
Red wine contains high levels flavonoids. It said researchers have been trying to pinpoint why red wine has a cardiovascular protective effect. Researchers found a 40 percent lower mortality rate from heart disease among people in France despite the high amount of saturated fats in their diet.
A review article of the latest studies looking at red wine and cardiovascular health shows drinking two to three glasses of red wine daily is good for the heart, according to a Yale School of Medicine researcher in the Journal of American College of Surgeons.
If you're not getting your daily two glasses of wine, make sure that you are supplementing your diet with aronia berries.
